record on both sides
Posted: 12 Oct 07 11:34 PM
hi gang!

i'm fairly new to this, so please bare w/ me.

my main use of the wildvoice system is so i can interview artists and then post it as a podcast for their fans to enjoy. my problem is that i do not have these ppl in the same room as me, so i have to figure out a way to interview them over the web.

i tried last week to record a show by using stickam.com, wherein i could hear both of us speaking. unfortunately it only got my side of the conversation and it means two hours (getting everything for the sound to work took ages) down the drain. i feel defeated!

it would be really great to get some input on how this could be achieved in a way that is easier for both the artist and myself. most of the info i find around here has to do w/ one-person podcasts.

help?

thank you in advance.

There are a few basic approaches to remote interviews like this.

One approach is to use a telephone and record the phone call. These days the easiest way to do this is with a free conference call service that supports recording. Try http://www.freeconferencepro.com/. Set up a number, both of you call in, and make a recording. It’s free if you are in the US and have nationwide long distance.

Another approach is to get a phone tap device (like they sell at radio shack) and use that to record your call directly through the Line-In of your PC. You can use WildVoice studio to do the recording. Internet telephone service can also be used if you find the quality good enough for recording.

Another approach is for both you and your interviewee to record each side of the conversation. Then use an audio editing tool to synchronize and merge the two recordings. This is sometimes called a double-ender.

This link may be old, but I recall that the information was good.

Here is a recording I made using an early version of WildVoice Studio. In this conversation, I discuss telephone interview techniques for podcasting with Theron Parlin from thoughtmechanics.com.

Theron called in on the telephone and I used a Gentner Microtel to mix and record the show with both our voices. The Microtel gives me very good quality for recroding of Theron's voice. My voice was fed through a good quality microphone and mixed through the Microtel.

One last comment on this.

I posted an old recording (made in summer of 2005) that Mike Murphy and I made while we were trying tofigure out what WildVoice would become. This recording was made using a double ender technique. We were a few hundred miles apart talking over the phone, but each of us was making a high quality local recording of our own voices that we later merged.
